Canon Point: Episode 11 of the Despair Arc.
Character Information: Here!
Personality:
The biggest and most important thing to note before I go any further is this: this is the real version of Chiaki. While there is a version of herself in Super Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, that Chiaki is actually an AI created from a unified desire to see a certain person again. So, while the Chiaki in the game is similar to this specific Chiaki, they are not the same. That Chiaki was actually based on this girl and what she was to Class 77-B. So with all of that in mind, it's time to get this show on the road.
Chiaki, when introduced, is quickly shown to be calm and somewhat quiet with an extreme tendency to hyperfocus. As in, she totally just runs into someone and it takes her a few seconds to go "oh" and realize what's happened, all because of how deeply focused she is on the game she's playing. It's not long after this that her homerun teacher just picks her up and tosses her over her shoulder, and she doesn't even fight back or anything. She just waves to the person that she ran into like this is a perfectly normal occurance, all while not looking up from her gaming system. This calmness lends itself to the fact that she's fairly unflappable as a person. I mean, while two of her beloved classmates were having a shounen style throwdown that blew up their classroom, she just sat there at her desk playing games. She didn't even look up! It was just a thing that was happening. It stands out, too, because the rest of the class was some mixture of being alarmed or completely bewildered.
Though, while I'm talking about Chiaki and games, it's important that I stress why it's such a big thing for her. Hope's Peak Academy is a place meant for the best of the best in whatever field they choose, and Chiaki is considered the Ultimate Gamer. There is no game that she can't do (aside from maybe dating sims...) and she loves everything to do with games. However, she initially doesn't think very highly of her talent. How can she use games to change the world for the better? How can she apply games to her actual life? So, like many gifted kids and teenagers, she feels rooted in place over what she can do with games. Thanks to the influence of her homeroom teacher and Hajime Hinata, though, she starts to open up. For example, she originally thought that she couldn't use games to connect with other people. However, after their class was gathered together and only held together by a loose thread of having Chisa as a homeroom teacher, she was reminded by said teacher that she could use her games to do exactly what she didn't think they could: help her connect with other people. Chiaki's next action? Following the advice of her teacher, she brought in games for everyone to play so that they could all become proper friends. And... well, it worked. It created bonds that would hold incredibly strong in the years to come. That little bit of advice widened her somewhat narrow worldview.
It's a good thing that games exist for Chiaki in this case, though. It led her to the best, and closest, friendships of her life. Friends were somewhat difficult for her to make because of how engrossed she could be with her games which was coupled with the fact that she's naturally somewhat quiet and super calm. With all of that said, though, it doesn't mean she's a bad friend or that she doesn't want friends. The difficult part was the start! And because of her choosing to follow her teacher's advice, she earned quite a few friends. The classes are a diverse bunch at Hope's Peak due to the variety of talents that the school recruits year after year, so the fact that she could bring so many people together with a few games left a great impression on her (and on everyone else). It's because of her initiative to bring in the game systems and start the bonding process that the rest of the class chose to make her the class representative. She reluctantly agreed, but it turned out that she was actually quite good at it thanks to her reliability and management skills, likely learned from the fact that she's such an avid gamer.
Also, while we're still on the topic of games, it's important to note that it's one of the few things to break Chiaki's normally calm demeanor. She's passionate about games. If you were to mention a game, or mention that you had interest in gaming, she would be there in a second flat to just talk about games. She adores them even if she doesn't initially think they'll be a great way for her to make friends. But honestly, if someone were to mention needing help, or wanting to play with someone, or just want to talk about whatever game they were playing, she would passionately make a point to be with them every single step of that interaction. This later extends to her friends, because she goes through a lot of lengths to try to make sure they're happy and enjoying life... and even if she's not always outwardly passionate thanks to her typically calm demeanor, she will always be there for them whenever they need her. There is no denying how much she cares for them thanks to this. Even when their teacher is forced to leave them for awhile, she continues to organize activities so that they can all be with each other and continue making important memories, and she even organizes a welcome back party for the teacher when she comes back to them. She just wants them to all be happy and together, and that's easily one of the most important things she has going on in her life. Even in the case of Hajime, the boy she ran into on her first day at Hope's Peak, she remained a commited friend even when he stopped showing up. She'd always go to the places where they used to meet in the hopes that he'd reappear even when he never did.
At the end of three years of this, it's an understatement to say that they're all friends. They might as well be a family with how close they are thanks to Chiaki's continued efforts to stay close, and their teacher's continuous encouragement that they come to class. Even as the world began to fall apart around them, they still continued to be a rock for each other. She was always sure to be a warm presence for them because of how deeply she loved them, and they all cherished that part of her. They always knew that there'd be someone that would believe in them no matter what, and that she would always be there. Even if it was just existing in their general direction, she made sure that they knew she was there. She always had an air of optimism to her, too, which made her seem all the warmer because of it. She was never forceful about her optimism and faith, but she always made sure it was apparent to the people that she was close to.
Of course, her faith in others also leads her to be quite trusting. She doesn't think that anyone she loves will betray her. This in itself ends up being a fault though, because even though Class 77-B was close, there were some things going on behind the scenes like Mikan falling into despair before everyone else, along with their teacher, thanks to Junko happening to them. This trust led to her to get shoved into a maze that ultimately became the place that she died. She didn't expect her classmate or her teacher to betray her, and that's why she ended up in a death maze full of traps and Junko mocking her. See, the reason Junko chose to execute her was because she knew that Chiaki was the one force that held class 77-B together. She was their optimism and hope, and Junko, being the kind of person to get off on hope getting crushed, decided she'd be the perfect person to die.
That's why she made them all watch a video of her crawling her way through a maze full of traps and essentially be tortured. The entire time Chiaki was in there, though, she kept saying that she wouldn't lose to Junko. She would stubbornly get up after every spear or saw hit her and continue to stubbornly make her way through the maze. Even with the betrayal of both her teacher and Mikan, she still wanted to make her way back to them because she didn't want to be away from them. She was hopeful that she'd make it through and get back to them! She was passionate about making it back to them. They are what encouraged her to keep going despite the odds against her. Of course, this was used against her in the end. She reached an exit, but when she thought she was finally back to her friends, and she was happy she could see them again... she was impaled, enough to where she was definitely going to die. She didn't die right away, though. She stubbornly held on because she was terrified of dying, terrified of not being able to be with her friends, terrified of missing out on life in general. With that said, she died at the feet of Hajime-turned-Izuru thanks to some plot points, and her true ability to have faith in others never faded even in her last moments. She knew that he was actually Hajime, and while he was cold in response due to not remembering her, she still poured her heart out to him. Her time in the maze and before her death also happens to be one of the few times she lost her calm demeanor, because... well, it was stressful and bad and she was directly in the thick of it.
Meanwhile, because of the connection she had to all of her friends, her death led to them falling into despair and that led to them helping to cause the apocalypse. And, like I mentioned in that first paragraph, she is the inspiration behind the Chiaki that appears in SDR2. They all wanted to desperately see her again.
Also, it's really important to note that she has a strong sense of right and wrong. She stubbornly sticks to her morals, even when faced with her own death and potential despair, not allowing them to win her over because it's wrong, and she can overcome it if she tries hard enough. Killing is wrong, making a point to actively hurt other people is wrong (unless they're excessively bad), and letting someone win over her while they're torturing her is wrong. That's why she refuses to lose to Junko and her despair. Even if she ultimately dies, she didn't want to give in to bad things happening even until the very end because they were wrong, along with her wanting to get back to her class. When Komaeda decides that someone has to die, she jumps in to remind him that killing is wrong, and she remains staunchly against it for the entirety of the scene, refusing to actually cave to him and what he wants to do because of how wrong she thinks it is.
Ultimately, Chiaki is a good person that actively tries to always be good, even in the face of despair. Even if she's quiet and calm, she doesn't let that stop her from being friendly and helpful to the people around her. Even if she sometimes has some difficulties with connecting to the people around her, she will still joke around with them and try to have fun in her own kind of way. She might as well be a fountain of hope and optimism, even if she's not super in-your-face about it.
